Southwest Chicago Suburbs Lawn Care Calendar

A southwest-suburban lawn plan should follow grass growth and weather conditions instead of forcing every task into the same week each year.

General guidance: Property conditions, turf type, weather, and product labels can change the right recommendation. Evaluate the actual site before beginning work.

Early Spring: Inspect Before Adding Inputs

Begin by clearing winter debris and looking for matted turf, standing water, bare areas, and plow or salt damage. Start mowing when the grass is actively growing and tall enough to cut—do not mow simply because the calendar says spring has started.

This is also the time to sharpen mower blades, confirm route access, and decide whether the property needs cleanup before recurring service.

Late Spring: Establish the Routine

Growth often accelerates as temperatures and rainfall increase. Mowing frequency should protect the one-third rule. Lawn treatments should be chosen based on current condition rather than automatically applying every possible product.

Identify drainage, compaction, shade, and turf-density problems early. Fertilizer alone cannot correct every underlying site issue.

Summer: Manage Stress

Cool-season lawns can slow or become dormant during hot, dry periods. Avoid scalping stressed turf. Irrigation decisions should be deliberate and consistent, and mowing should respond to actual growth.

Make note of areas that repeatedly thin, dry out, or collect water. Those patterns help guide fall repair decisions.

Early Fall: Repair and Strengthen

Late summer through early fall is an important period for many cool-season lawn tasks. Depending on the property, the plan may include core aeration, overseeding, lawn treatments, and cleanup.

Schedule early. Service routes and weather windows become tighter as leaves begin falling and winter preparation overlaps with regular lawn work.

Late Fall and Winter: Finish Clean and Plan Ahead

Continue mowing while the lawn is actively growing, complete leaf and debris cleanup, and clear items that could interfere with snow service. Commercial properties should confirm winter access priorities before the first storm.

Use the quieter season to review what worked, where the lawn struggled, and which services should be scheduled earlier next year.
