Illinois Mowing Guide

How High Should You Mow an Illinois Lawn?

A taller, consistent cut is usually healthier for the cool-season lawns common across northern Illinois than repeatedly scalping the turf.

General guidance: Property conditions, turf type, weather, and product labels can change the right recommendation. Evaluate the actual site before beginning work.

Start with Mowing Height, Not the Calendar

Most home lawns in Illinois are made up of cool-season grasses. University of Illinois Extension generally suggests mowing most lawns around 2½ to 3 inches, while some turf types perform well toward the taller end of that range. Taller turf can support deeper roots, shade the soil, and compete more effectively with weeds.

The right setting still depends on turf type, current condition, weather, and the property. The goal is not to force every lawn to the same number—it is to avoid repeatedly cutting so short that the grass stays stressed.

Use the One-Third Rule to Decide Frequency

A useful guideline is to avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade during one mowing. That means the schedule should respond to growth, not simply the day printed on a calendar.

Spring growth may require more frequent mowing. Summer heat or dry conditions may slow growth. If a lawn becomes overgrown, lowering it gradually is gentler than cutting it extremely short in one visit.

Sharp Blades and Dry Conditions Matter

A sharp mower blade makes a cleaner cut. Dull blades tear the leaf tips, which can leave the lawn looking ragged. Mowing wet turf can create clumps, rut soft soil, and produce an uneven result.

Professional mowing also includes the details around the main cut: careful trimming where equipment cannot reach and clearing loose clippings from hard surfaces.

What to Tell a Mowing Company

  • Gate width, locks, and access instructions
  • Pets or invisible-fence markers
  • New seed, soft areas, or irrigation components
  • Preferred service frequency
  • Areas that should not be entered or cut

Clear property notes help a recurring crew deliver a more consistent result.
